Old Masters Gel Stain is a highly pigmented, oil-based stain designed to achieve intense colors on interior and exterior wood, fiberglass, primed metal, and composition surfaces. Its thick formula allows easy application and superior color control, necessary to achieve a rich and uniform color on most surfaces in a single application.
Gel Stain is especially recommended for woods such as pine, birch, maple, poplar, and cherry. Gel Stain is excellent for vertical surfaces.
Coverage
Approximately 250 to 300 square feet per quart.
If the wood is finely sanded or nonporous, coverage is approximately 200 to 400 square feet per quart.
If the surface is porous, coverage is approximately 75 to 125square feet per quart.
Coverage will vary significantly depending on application method and condition of wood.
Dry Time
Approximately 6 to 8 hours depending upon temperature, humidity, air movement, and the amount of stain on the surface. For additional colour depth, a second coat of stain can be applied after 8 hours. Ideal drying conditions recommended are 70° to 75°F and 35 to 50% humidity.
** Due to the nature and depth of colour for the stain colour Carbon Black, the minimum dry time is 24 hours. Dry time may also be extended due to excess stain application or lack of stain penetration.
Clean Up
Using a cleaning solvent, such as paint thinner or mineral spirits, is recommended for clean up.
Finish Coat
Old Masters clear finishes are recommended. However, this stain can be topcoated with most clears. If a lacquer topcoat is desired, test for compatibility before using. For exterior use, we suggest Old Masters Ascend Exterior Water-Based Clear Finish or Old Masters Spar-Marine Varnish. When applying water-based finishes, allow the stain to dry completely, then wait an additional 24 hours before topcoating.
